Luggage locks Fobney Lock

Fobney Lock is a lock on the River Kennet in the Small Mead area of Reading in the English county of Berkshire.

Fobney Lock was built between 1718 and 1723 under the supervision of the engineer John Hore of Newbury, and this stretch of the river is now administered by British Waterways and known as the Kennet Navigation. It has a rise/fall of 7 ft 8 in (2.24 m).

There have been ongoing plans to turn Fobney Island, adjacent to the lock, into a wetlands nature reserve.

Varistaipale canal is a Finnish canal in Heinävesi. The canal is a part of Heinävesi route (Heinäveden reitti), a route with six canals: Kerma, Vihovuonne, Pilppa, Karvio, Taivallahti and Varistaipale canals. The canal was built in 1911–1913 and has four locks. It is the biggest canal in Finland being the only canal to have this many locks. The height of drop totals 14.5 meters and the length is 1,100 meters.

Next to the canal there is a canal museum.

A joint lock is a grappling technique involving manipulation of an opponent’s joints in such a way that the joints reach their maximal degree of motion.

In budo these are referred to as, 関節技 kansetsu-waza, “joint locking technique”Ohlenkamp, Neil. Classification of Techniques in Kodokan Judo. judoinfo.com. Accessed February 26 2006.) and in Chinese martial arts as Chin na su which literally means “technique of catching and locking”.

These typically involve isolating a particular joint, and leveraging it in an attempt to force the joint to move past its normal range of motion. Joint locks usually involve varying degrees of pain in the joints, and if applied forcefully and/or suddenly, may cause injury, such as muscle, tendon and ligament damage, even dislocation, or bone fractures.

Joint locks can be divided into five general types according to which section of the body they affect:

  • Armlocks
  • Leglocks
  • Small joint manipulation
  • Spinal locks
  • Wristlocks

These general types can be further divided into subtypes according to which specific joint(s) they affect, or the type of motion they involve.

Usage

Joint locks are commonly featured in all forms of grappling, whether it be in martial arts, self-defense, combat sport or hand to hand combat application. The variants involving lesser leverage on a smaller joint (such as wristlocks) are often featured in law-enforcement or self-defense application, where they are used as pain compliance holds. Joint locks that involve full body leverage can on the other hand be used in hand to hand combat to partially or fully disable an opponent, by tearing major joints such as knees or elbows.

Common martial arts featuring joint locks include Aikido, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Catch Wrestling, Hapkido, Jiu-Jitsu, Judo, Ninjutsu and mixed martial arts. They are usually practiced in a maximally safe manner, with controlled movements, and releasing the joint lock once it is apparent that it has been effectively applied. In combat sports, joint locks are used as submission holds, and are intended to force the opponent to submit; the lock will be controlled and held until an opponent submits or a referee recognizes the threat of injury and intervenes. The types of joint locks allowed in competitions featuring them varies according to the perceived danger in their application. Armlocks are generally considered safer, while small joint manipulation and spinal locks are banned in nearly all combat sports.

The Kentucky River Authority is an agency of the Commonwealth of Kentucky. Its major purpose is to operate and maintain a set of locks and dams (specifically Locks 5 through 14) along the course of the Kentucky River which was originally built by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and are now in the process of being deeded over to the Authority. The KRA was established in 1986.

This system makes the Kentucky River navigable throughout its entire 259 mile (437 km) length from its mouth into the Ohio River all the way up to its headwaters at the confluence of the North and South Forks. However, it is not available for efficient use by many of the modern barge tows due to the relatively small size of the locks and the fact that the channel is maintained to only a six-foot draft rather than the nine-foot draft that is more typical and the standard used on most major river systems in the U.S. The Authority also works to prevent water pollution as much as is practicable along the Kentucky River Basin, in large measure because the stream is the source of the drinking water for approximately one-sixth of all Kentucky residents. The Authority’s responsibility for water quality was added to its mission in 1988 after a serious and prolonged drought brought issues of water quality and availabilty to the fore. In fact, the system is now operated more for the purpose of maintaining a secure supply of drinkable water for Lexington and other communities than it is to maximize navigation.

In computer science, non-strict two-phase locking, also 2PL, is a locking method used in concurrent systems.

The rules for 2PL are similar to those of Strict 2PL:

  1. If a transaction T wants to read/write an object, it must request a shared/exclusive lock on the object.
  2. A transaction cannot request additional locks on any object once it releases any lock, and it can release locks at any time (not only at commit time, as in Strict 2PL).

So, every transaction has a growing phase (it acquires locks) and a shrinking phase (it releases locks). 2PL allows only conflict serializable schedules, but doesn’t guarantee that deadlocks will be avoided.

2PL is one scheduling algorithm, sometimes used instead of:

  • simultaneous locking, simultaneous release (Disadvantage: redundant locking, no interactive transactions)
  • incremental locking, simultaneous release (Disadvantage: Deadlock)
  • simultaneous locking, incremental release (Disadvantage: rollback, redundant locking)
  • incremental locking, incremental release (Disadvantage: deadlock, rollback)

Luggage locks Whitchurch Lock

Whitchurch Lock is a lock and weir situated on the River Thames in England. The lock is located in the Oxfordshire village of Whitchurch-on-Thames but the weir crosses the river to the Berkshire village of Pangbourne. Both lock and weir are owned and managed by the Environment Agency.

The long serving lock keeper is Brian Butcher who has worked on the river for more than forty years starting as an apprentice engineer for Bert Bushnell’s hire fleet based in Maidenhead in the 1960s.

Whitchurch Lock is one of the few locks on the River Thames which has no public access other than by boat.

The reach passes along the Chiltern Hills, culminating in Goring Gap. On the Oxfordshire side are Hartslock beech woods, named after a lock that was removed in 1910. On the Berksire side is Child Beale Wildlife Park. The Thames Path crosses Whitchurch Bridge into Oxfordshire and continues through Whitchurch away from the river as it goes round Coombe Park, returning to the river at Hartslock. It continues on the Oxfordshire river bank to Goring.

Luggage locks Carpet bag

A carpet bag is a traveling bag made of carpet, commonly from an oriental rug, ranging in size from a small purse to a large duffel bag.

Such bags were popular in the United States and Europe during the 19th century. They are still made to this day, typically as women’s decorative small luggage and purses, although typically no longer out of old carpets.

The carpetbaggers of the Reconstruction era following the American Civil War were given their name from this type of luggage which they carried.

“The old-fashioned carpet bag (Fig. 1) is still unsurpassed by any, where rough wear is the principal thing to be studied. Such a bag, if constructed of good Brussels carpeting and unquestionable workmanship, will last a lifetime, provided always that a substantial frame is used.”

Carpet bags sometimes also served the dual use as a “railway rug”, a common item in the 19th century to keep warm in drafty and unheated rail-cars. The rug could either be opened as a blanket, or latched up on the sides as a dual purpose traveling bag. From Robert Louis Stevenson’s Travels with a Donkey in the Cévennes (1879): “… my railway-rug, which, being also in the form of a bag, made me a double castle for cold nights.”

Luggage locks Sargent and Greenleaf

Sargent and Greenleaf, more commonly known among locksmithing circles as S&G, is a U.S. company that manufactures combination locks, key-operated safe and safe deposit box locks and associated equipment.

The company was established in 1865 when James Sargent and Halbert Greenleaf became partners. A manufacturing facility was built in Rochester, New York, and the company remained in that city until 1975. Since then, the company has been in Nicholasville, Kentucky.

In 1857 Sargent had designed the Sargent’s Magnetic Bank Lock, said to be the first successful key changeable combination lock.

In 1873 Sargent created the first time lock, using parts from eight-day clocks.

In 1880 Sargent connected one of his combination locks to a delay timer, creating the first time-delay combination lock.

Locks are sold around the world through associated distributors.

Luggage locks Lever tumbler lock

A lever tumbler lock is a type of lock that uses a set of levers to prevent the bolt from moving in the lock. In the simplest of these, lifting the tumbler above a certain height will allow the bolt to slide past.

‘Double acting’ Lever tumbler locks were invented in 1778 by Robert Barron of England. These required the lever to be lifted to a certain height by having a slot cut in the lever. So lifting the lever too far was as bad as not lifting the lever far enough. This is the type of lever lock most currently used today.

Lever locks generally use a bitted key. Some use a double-bitted key.
